I got in some culture this weekend

Saturday nite I went to see an Oscar Wilde play called Salome at the Wadsworth Theatre. I got dragged to it by the roommate who didn’t want to go by herself. Yes, this is the same roommate that two weeks ago called me the biggest jerkass she’s ever met. Bigger than the ex husband that stuck her with two car leases than ran us (I say us because I helped pay them off) over $1,000/month for five years. Who the hell leases a car for five years? Smaller jerks than me apparently. Don’t even get me started on the back taxes (which I didn’t help with).
One of the cool things about living in L.A. is you can go to just about any play at just about any playhouse/theatre and see Hollywood stars up close and in person. The star of this show was Al Pacino. However there were a few faces you’d know if you’re a big tv watcher. Geoffrey Owens, who played Alvin (the oldest daughter’s husband) on The Cosby Show was in it. It was directed by Estelle Parsons who was Roseanne’s mom on Roseanne. Also Roxanne Hart, who I recognized, I just didn’t know where from…turns out she was on Chicago Hope.
Anyway, the play was pretty good. I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a comedy or if people were simply laughing at Al Pacino’s lines because they were in awe. There was one part where I think he forgot a line and he improvised. That was funny.
In other news I rode 15 miles today. It totally sucked but it was nice to get out. Overall it was a good week on the bike. Next week should be even better.

Today I got in a 41 mile ride along the beach. Its pretty flat until the last 5 miles where it’s almost all uphill. I felt great during the ride, like I was going faster at a lower heart rate than before. I averaged a heart rate of 156 bpm and the max was 177 beats; that was undoubtedly that final uphill run. It was about 3 beats lower the first 20 miles then I caught a vicious headwind on the way back. If I didn’t have to deal with that last uphill stretch I felt like I could have ridden 70 miles easily.
Well, I won some and I lost some…

but I pretty much achieved what I wanted to. I did far more reading than I expected, over 1100 pages. I did far less cycling than I expected, about 200 miles and I probably watched about 15 hours of tv in total.
I think I will continue to read one book per month while I try to hit my weekly goal of cycling 100 miles per week. The really good news is the days are now long enough for me to ride after work. That probably means less running which I don’t really care for anyway. We shall see.
Who said that?

It was the first day of school and a new student named Pedro Martinez, the son of a Mexican retaurateur, entered the fourth grade.
The teacher said, “Let’s begin by reviewing some American history.
“Who said ‘Give me Liberty, or give me Death?’ ”
She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Pedro, who had his hand up.
“Patrick Henry, 1775.”
“Very good!” apprised the teacher. “Now, who said, “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth?”
Again, no response except from Pedro: “Abraham Lincoln, 1863.” The teacher snapped at the class, “Class, you should be ashamed! Pedro, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do!” She heard a loud whisper: “Screw the Mexicans!” “Who said that?” she demanded.
Pedro put his hand up. “Jim Bowie, 1836.” At that point, a student in the back said, “I’m gonna puke.” The teacher glared and asked, “All right! Now, who said that?”
Again, Pedro answered, “George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991.”
Now furious, another student yelled, “Oh yeah? Suck this!” Pedro jumped out of his chair waving his hand and shouting to the teacher, “Bill Clinton to Monica Lewinsky, 1997!”
Now, almost hysterical, teacher said, “If you say anything else, I’ll kill you!”
Pedro frantically yelled at the top of his voice, “Gary Condit to Chandra Levy, 2001.”
The teacher fainted, and as the class gathered around her on the floor, someone said, “Oh shit, we’re in BIG trouble now!”
Pedro whispered, “Saddam Hussein, 2003.”
Finally someone throws a eraser at Pedro, someone shouted “Duck”! Another kid asked “Who said that?” Pedro: “Dick Cheney, 2006!”
We Salute You

“Today we salute you, Mr. Myspace addict. You thought you could just log on once, but little did you know it would consume your life. Joining one pointless group was just not enough. Adding every person you never spoke to in high school, and people you’ve never met who live 3000 miles away just to be “virtually” popular. As if IM wasn’t enough to feed into your stalker-ish behavior. Oooo look at you with your 340659 “friends”. So go ahead, crack open an ice cold Bud Light, Compulsive Away Message Checker Turned Myspace Psycho. It’s too bad that you’re not too popular at the bar, but in virtual reality, you’d be the life of the cyber party.”

Mid-month report – 3 days late
Posted by Dubbayoo | Filed under Books, TV & Film, General, Triathlon
I have probably watched 6-7 hours of television total, which is about where I expected to be at this point. I have finished two books – Every Second Counts by Lance Armstrong and Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. That makes 720 pages in total so I’ve already exceeded my goal there. I started The Green Mile by Stephen King yesterday, which is about 400 pages. I’m not getting as much cycling in as I hoped. I rode an hour after work yesterday and today. Now that I have enough daylight after work I’m gonna try hittin it three weekdays plus weekends.
edit – splurged on a cheeseburger and fries for lunch, but I did have a diet coke.
