The SEC still reigns supreme

A month ago everyone was going on and on about conference parity and how strong the PAC-10, Big East conferences were. Every year there a few pretenders that try to crash the party but you can’t get through an entire season on emotion and hype. At the end of the day talent rises to the top. Right now you’ve still got five SEC teams in the top 25, just like always. 10 of 12 SEC teams have winning records versus:
- 8 of 11 Big Ten teams
- 7 of 12 ACC teams
- 6 of 12 Big 12 teams
- 5 of 10 PAC-10 teams
- 5 of 8 Big East teams
- 4 of 13 MAC teams
I’m just sayin…

Let me preface by saying I love dogs as much as anyone on the planet and what Michael Vick did is despicable on many levels. He brought this all on himself and I have no sympathy for the guy…….however.
I think someone should explain why Michael Vick is scum of the earth for shooting, drowning, electrocuting and hanging dogs meanwhile John Gotti, who probably shot, drowned, electrocuted and hung even more humans is a national hero amongst many white Americans. Why do we vilify gangster rappers and the inner city drug culture and at the same time romanticize the Mafia?
Yes. You can make the case that mafia guys killing other mafia guys is a win-win for the rest of America but not everyone they killed or harmed was involved in organized crime. John Gotti allegedly chainsawed a guy to death in his basement after he struck and killed Gotti’s grandson in a car accident. Consider all the businesses they shook down until they went bankrupt. Consider the mafia tax that went into New York construction projects.
Vick is going to pay the price for what he’s done. There is no doubt about that. Let’s move the f*ck on. If the American people were 25% as outraged by the near 3,000 soldiers that have died in Iraq as they are about those eight dogs WE’D BE OUT OF THERE ALREADY!
GO DAWGS!!!

One foggy night a Georgia fan was heading south and a
Florida fan was driving north. While crossing a
narrow bridge they hit each other head-on, mangling
both cars.
The Georgia fan manages to climb out of his car and
survey the damage. He looks at his twisted car and
says, “Man, I’m lucky to be alive”. Likewise, the
Florida fan gets out of his car uninjured, he too,
feeling fortunate to have survived.
The Florida fan walks over to the Georgia fan and
says, “Hey, man, I think this is a sign that we
should put away our petty differences and live as
friends instead of being rivals.” The Georgia fan
thinks for a moment and says, “You know, you’re
absolutely right! We should be friends. In fact, I’m
going to see if something else survived the wreck.”
The Georgia fan then pops open the trunk of his car
and removes a full undamaged bottle of Jack Daniels.
He says to the Florida fan, “I think this is another
sign that we should toast to our newfound friendship.”
The Florida fan agrees and grabs the bottle. After
sucking down half of the bottle, the Florida fan hands
the bottle back to the Georgia fan and says, “Your
turn”. The Georgia fan calmly twists the cap back on
the bottle, throws the rest of the bottle over the
bridge into the river and says, “Nah, I think I’ll
just wait for the cops to show up.”

So UT beat UGA. Scratch that….so UT whupped UGA. I was not suprised considering the way our offense has played the last two weeks. The freshman QB’s were not getting the job done at all.
As I predicted one of us was going to be extremely upset and unfortunately that someone is me. I was handling it fairly well until about 30 minutes after the game ended…then I got the call. Yes, THE call. from Belle…at a time of day she pretty much never calls. The “I’m not going to gloat and say anything but I’m kinda hoping you feel it anyway” call. I did not handle that well at all. Especially after she decided to say the words you NEVER say to someone from the South.
She consoles me with the phrase “it’s only a football game”. The insult of all insults. It was pretty much downhill from there on. As anyone who has spent more than 24 hours in the South can tell you UT-UGA is NOT just a football game. Matter of fact football is NEVER just a football game…maybe it is if you’re a fan of Vandy or the West Georgia Wolves who are now 0-5 for the season with only two even remotely winnable games left. Southerners are fond of saying “football is life, everything else is just details”.
After last year’s game Belle refused to even discuss the game…and she’s a girl. I’m pretty sure she’s never strapped on the shoulder pads and heard the “click clack” (Under Armour commercial). It’s been twe….yeah, it’s been a long time since I have either but I still do the living room dance like I’m the head coach on the sideline instructing the QB where the open receiver is.
So there you have it. Belle has possession of the Dogbone trophy. (both schools have dogs for mascots even though UGA VII is way cooler). We haven’t spoken since the call. I suspect her phone will be ringing later tonight…whimper.
A no-win situation

Today is the worst day of the college football season. The day I’ve been dreading for months now. Well, the night of the Georgia-Florida game could be worse but that’s not for another two weeks.
Tonight it’s my #10 ranked Georgia Bulldogs versus Belle’s Tennessee Vols. No matter who wins one of us will be extremely upset and the winner won’t be doing any gloating if they know what’s good for them.
UGA has played like absolute crap the last two weeks so I was not expecting much from the Dogs, especially since the last time they played in Athens TN took the opening kickoff; marched right down the field for a TD and ultimately won even though UGA was ranked #3 at the time. I even avised a guy at work to bet against UGA and i’m sure he did. Apparently Joe T(ereshinski) is back at QB after hurting his ankle in the first game and the Dogs are playing well in the first half.
Even though this could be a good day for the Dogs it may not be such a good night for me. Either way the loser of this game can pretty much write off getting to the SEC championship game. I was hoping LSU would beat Florida earlier today and that didn’t happen. We both hate Florida. I’ve got my fingers crossed; for what I’m not sure….maybe a 21-21 tie or a meteor strike cancelllng the game. We shall see.

So Cinncinnati Bengal teammates Odell Thurman (UGA), Reggie McNeal (A&M), and Chris Henry (WV) are out on the town at 3AM on a Sunday night (monday morning?). They’re knocking a few back celebrating a win over Pittsburgh. It comes time to go home and even though it’s Henry’s car he is apparently a bit knackered after catching 5 passes in the game. Thurman and McNeal are fresh as daisies because they didn’t do a damn thing all game. Odell is sitting out a 4-game suspension for missing a drug test and Reggie…..well, he’s just Reggie. In their infinite wisdom these rocket scientists collectively decide Odell should be the designated driver.
Lo and behold, Cincy’s finest pull them over only to find Odell has done enough 12oz curls to register a 0.18 BAC level…oh yeah, Einstein was coming off suspension next week. Now he’s staring at a minimum one-year suspension from the NFL.
How stupid do you have to be, people?
